Our
1931 Covered Wagon, on permanent display at Lake George Schroon Valley Resort, was owned
by Mary North Kimball of Chazy, NY. Mary attended Potsdam College and earned a degree in
teaching. She taught school in Chazy, NY, where her family owned a large farm and where
her father was a local businessman. After marriage, local education department laws
prevented her from continuing her teaching position, leading Mary to begin a second career
running boarding houses. She opened a large boarding home, called Normal Court, which was
run for female students attending Plattsburg College.

Mary
purchased the Covered Wagon in 1931. In that same year, she and her husband drove the
Covered Wagon cross country with another couple. During the summer months, they enjoyed
camping in their trailer on Lake Champlain. These days, the original Covered Wagon, built
in Detroit and registered as New York States first RV trailer, has been restored for
the enjoyment of our guests at Lake George Schroon Valley Resort. Come and get a better
understanding of the origins of family camping, and get a hands-on look at what
roughing it in luxury meant during Americas Great Depression.
